CAREER DEVELOPMENT

The background:
Diane, a Primary Care Trust Manager with the NHS came to us when her fixed term contract was under threat of non-renewal. This had knocked her confidence considerably. She enjoyed her work but due to reorganisation in the NHS, jobs were insecure, with many redundancies and permanent contracts hard to come by.  Di was clear on her next career objective – she wanted long-term job security as well as a step up in her career with good future prospects. It looked more and more likely that the NHS would not be able to offer this and Di consulted us on navigating her career development.

The issues:
o Securing a permanent job before her contract ended
o Ensuring that it offered her a step up
o Long term job security
o Confidence

The process
Her coach began first working with Diane to help her clarify her long and short term goals and what she needed to achieve them.  - including any gaps in her qualifications that may hamper future progression. She established that she wanted to her remain in the health sector, and build on her existing contacts in the new position - a challenge given the industry climate. One of her challenges was also retaining her confidence in a turbulent and insecure work environment and a significant proportion of our work concentrated on increasing her profile and visibility and developing unshakeable self belief.

The results
Di exceeded her aims. She secured a permanent job within the public sector - a step up, with a much improved package and an excellent prospects. She also now has a very clear idea of her long term goals with tangible steps in place to get there.

What Diane says

Working with my coach has enabled me to reflect on my situation, provide me with the confidence to take charge of these changes and stay focused on my main objectives. She has enabled me to stay on track when my career development looked in doubt and encouraged supported and challenged me enabling me to take that next step in my career.”.
